In recent years, we have watched as the Church has become more and more apathetic and complacent. I have come to believe that one primary reason for this is that we are so easily distracted. I suppose that Satan is the ultimate magician and is without a doubt, the master of misdirection.

So how do we fight the ever-present urge to turn our attention from the things of God to the things of the world? John Piper talks about five things we can do to come out of the mesmerizing spell of Satan’s distractions.

1. Recognize that it is a problem
2. Pray (Seek the Lord
3. Immerse yourself in the Bible
4. Get in a group where you talk about spiritual matters
5. Witness

I think that it is vitally important that we recognize that we are either at war with evil or we are in league with it. There is no middle ground here. Jesus said in Matthew 12:30, “He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.” I might even go so far as to say, “He who doesn’t stand consistently for me, stands against me.”

Piper said, “I want to stand for seriousness about God.” It could be that the root cause of our problem is that we are not taking the things of God nor God Himself serious. Can you imagine standing in the presence of the Lord Jesus in heaven and telling him to wait while you answer some stupid text?

Ephesians 6:12-13 says, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” The key word here is “wrestle.” We struggle daily with the adversary as he attempts to dissuade us from focusing on the will and the word of God.
So how do we overcome? By taking John Piper’s advice, but also by recognizing that we are at war and should respond as a warrior.
